Drive Sober Campaign
Just before midnight, there was a drunk driving checkpoint on Highway 72 Between Moores Mill and Shields Road, The checkpoint backed up traffic on Highway 72. Many individuals became impatient with the traffic and made 'U' turns to take other routes. For those that made these 'U' turns, the Huntsville Police lit them up and pulled them over. Making a 'U' turn near a Checkpoint gives a police officer the impression that an individual may be evading a checkpoint. Drivers who were not stopped were inconvenienced no more than about five minutes each due to traffic. The checkpoint is part of a national campaign to crack down on drunk and/or distracted driving. The campaign runs through Labor Day weekend.
